PSLV Orbital Experimental Module-3 (POEM-3): Recently, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had a successful re-entry of the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module-3 (POEM-3) into the Earth’s atmosphere leaving no debris in Earth’s atmosphere. The operation took place on January 1, 2024. PSLV Orbital Experimental Module-3 (POEM-3) deorbited from an altitude of 650 km to 350 km, through a re-entry process.

POEM-3: India’s Innovative Space Platform
POEM-3, short for PSLV Orbital Experimental Module-3, is a space platform developed by India. It utilizes the spent PS4 stage of the PSLV-C58 vehicle, launched on January 1, 2024, to deploy XPoSat. This cost-effective platform has achieved all its objectives, showcasing India’s prowess in space technology.
Achievements and Operations
- Deployment and Orbit: POEM-3 successfully deployed XPoSat into a 650 km orbit before lowering itself to a 350 km circular orbit to minimize orbit decay time post-experiment. It operates as a three-axis-attitude controlled platform with telecommand & telemetry capabilities.
- Payloads and Experiments: It carried nine payloads from various institutions and space startups, facilitated by IN-SPACe. Notable experiments include ARKA200 and RUDRA for propulsion, LEAP-TD for communication, and WeSAT, BeliefSat0, RSEM, and DEX for data collection. Additionally, it demonstrated a 100 W Fuel Cell Power System and a Si-C-based High Power Li-Ion Battery.
- Performance and Data Collection: Each payload operated as planned, with data collected regularly for analysis. POEM-3 completed 400 orbits by its 25th day and currently orbits at approximately 322 km by 352 km. Predictions suggest it will continue orbiting for around 73 more days before re-entry.
Future Plans and Sustainability
- Further Experiments: POEM-3 will conduct additional experiments to generate data for future missions, including upcoming POEM configurations. These experiments will contribute to India’s space research and technology development.
- Debris Management: With POEM-3’s planned re-entry in three months, the PSLV-C58 XPoSat mission ensures zero debris left in space, showcasing India’s commitment to sustainable space exploration.
