Mr Tarun Bajaj, aged 61, who was a former Independent Director on the Board of Hindustan Unilever Limited, is appointed as head of the US-India Tax Forum. He brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise, having served in the Indian Administrative Service since 1988, belonging to the Haryana Cadre. Prior to his appointment as an Independent Director, Mr. Bajaj held the esteemed position of Revenue Secretary in the Government of India until his retirement in November 2022. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in shaping important policy matters related to revenue collection and taxation. Notably, he spearheaded efforts towards the stabilization of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and significantly contributed to the enhancement of revenue collections under GST and Income Tax. Additionally, he led initiatives to modernize technology in tax administration, leading to increased transparency and efficiency. Mr. Bajaj’s illustrious career also includes serving as the Economic Affairs Secretary, where he was responsible for formulating crucial economic policies, including fiscal policy, investments, and infrastructure financing. He played a crucial role in steering the government’s economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic, overseeing the rollout of relief measures and stimulus packages.
Furthermore, Mr. Bajaj has chaired the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund and has held directorial positions on prestigious boards such as the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). He has also represented India as Governor for various international financial institutions, including the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the World Bank, among others. Mr. Bajaj holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce from Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University, an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, and a Postgraduate Degree (M.Sc.) from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) from the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India, Hyderabad.
